| About Us |
| Who are we? |
The Manatee County GIS Division is the main GIS services entity for the County. We have 10 people in our group and are located in the County Administration building in downtown Bradenton.
|
| What do we do? |
The GIS Division creates and maintains the GIS infrastructure for...
- Street centerline and annotation for the County's 911 system
- Utilities (potable water, sewer, reclaimed)
We also provide...
- 911 Map System support
- Hard copy maps to County departments
Oh, and we...
- Create and maintain the County's centralized geodatabases
- Create and maintain the GIS Division's web presence
- Create and maintain the County's Internet Map Services
|
| How are we expanding our GIS services? |
We are currently implementing an Enterprise GIS initiative. This means that we are opening up our system so that many people with different skill levels and needs can access it at the same time.
We've been building this "Enterprise GIS" by...
- Developing multi-user geodatabases
- Upgrading our web and map services
- Installing GIS viewer software in satellite offices
- Implementing GIS Standards
- Conducting GIS Training
- Initiating GIS Outreach
- Forming a GIS Steering Committee

| What is GIS? |
Simply put, a GIS is a method to visualize, manipulate, analyze and display information that is tied to a spatial location. This is accomplished by linking database tables to geographic features. This produces "layers" that can be mapped in a GIS.
By overlaying database-linked map layers, a whole new world opens up for visualizing relationships. Here are just a few examples:
- Businesses can use a GIS to locate suitable locations for a new building or to find the most efficient route for delivering goods and services.
- Scientists can use a GIS to better understand complex relationships such as where habitats are most endangered.
- Farmers can use a GIS to maximize the efficiency of crop production.
